Finding your passion to Never working a day of your life!

It’s hard to look at yourself in the mirror, and I mean like really stare at yourself. For me, I kinda want to look away for fear that if I truly accept myself in that mirror…the good, the bad, and the ugly than I won’t like what I see. But really accepting who you are, and rejoicing in the strengths and accepting where you need to grow…well that all leads to a glorious version of you and ultimately will lead you to your purpose in life. There is NOTHING more satisfying than figuring out your calling.

I get asked all the time how I get into hair and makeup. And since I can never give a short reply, I find myself starting from the beginning and 20 minutes later the person has their answer. Well, I’m sorry don’t ask if you don’t want to hear the ENTIRE story. I am a story -teller, there are no short answers.  I have ALWAYS been into doing hair. LIKE ALWAYS. My mom has me on a video from 1990 and someone askes me what I want to be when I grow up, and I say I want to do hair. I was 8. Don’t do the math. I am currently 34. I saved you some brain power. Your welcome.

I heard all-the-freaking-time from my mother, “Find your passion in life, make it your career, and you will never work a day in your life.” I can see her standing in the kitchen saying this, driving the 1997 white minivan saying this and kissing my forehead before bed saying this. And hearing it so much I was like ya, ok mom. Insert roll eye. Oh I’m in for a treat when Evy bird is a teenager (my daughter who is currently 5.) I’m pretty sure my teenage attitude is going to karma itself right back at me in 10 years with my own ball of sass child.

But you know what? My mom was right! I don’t work a day in my life because I found my passion. I absolutely LOVE beautifying women. LOVE LOVE LOVE! But as so often in life, getting where I am today was a journey, a process, and a road that was long and HARD. And not many stay on the long, hard road to find their passion because it’s just too long of a journey, and often not even profitable for many years. But friends if you can stay on it, I promise you too will find your calling and be able to make money doing it.

But how do you find your passion in life and make it your career? It sounds so simple, and yet can be so over-whelming and seem almost impossible. Almost is the key word. You just have to try.

Here are some steps that I have found on my own journey to finding my passion and making it a career.

  1. Find out who you are. Yes you! Focus on really getting to know you and what excites you, what drives you, what makes you jump out of bed in the morning excited. Take a personality test, find out if you even like people. Cuz guess what, some of us don’t like people, and therefore shouldn’t be an industry that works with people. What are your strengths, what are your weaknesses. What kind of personality do you have? What are you naturally good at? What are you drawn to learning about? What comes “easy” for you but no one around you? Find out you everything you can do to figure out what makes you tick.  Finding out who you, and all the little details of what makes you tick will ultimately lead you to your passion.
  2. You need to find your “why.” Why do you love such and such (insert skill here.) You may have a sklll that no one else has, but if you don’t have a powerful why behind it, it’s hard to turn it into a succesful business. Let’s get real here, money doesn’t motivate everyone.  I don’t just do hair and makeup to make money. I am making women FEEL beautiful. I am investing LOVE through an act of service to help women FEEL better about themselves. In my career, there is nothing more satisfying that hearing someone say I have never looked and felt better about the way I look.  Insert happy dance!
  3. Find your side hustle. Huh Say what? You most likely have bills to pay and mouths to feed, especially your own, so quitting your main source of income may not be an option for you immediately. Try doing something on the side, that inspires and captivates you on your off time. Instead of watching tv, do your passion at night. Once you discover who you are. You set yourself in motion to “try” different routes to make money doing something that you are naturally good at doing. Think outside the box. Are you crafty and can make the best whatever?? Then try selling something on etsy. Are you gifted with technology?? Set up a technology consulting side business because let’s face it some of us don’t have those skills! There is SOMETHING you can do that you love and make money doing it. There is. You just have to start the journey of trying.
  4. Realize that no time has been “wasted.” Sometimes I hear people say well, it’s too late. I have been in this career for 5, 10, 30 years, and it’s too late to switch. Well, guess what? It is fear of failing, changing, and failing again that prevents you from making a career change. If you are not dead, than it is NOT TOO LATE. I began this post with saying that I have been on a journey in my own career. It changes and morphes, as I do on the journey. My passion 10 years ago is not the same passion I have today. Yes they are related but not the same. Fear of trying, fear of changes and fear of failing will keep you stuck and leave you unfulfilled in life.

I’m going to end with this…Most importantly: Ask God to show you what you were created to do. Do you know we all were created for a purpose, and it is unique to you? No two journey’s are going to look alike. My journey will look different than yours. Be ok that they look different. Be at peace with who you are today and where you are on the journey. Today you are good enough, and tomorrow you will be good enough. Recite that over and over until you believe it.

Permission to Fail OFTEN gives you permission to launch! Last weekend was Easter, and I find that I give myself permission to eat WHATEVER my little heart desires on holidays.  Like calories don’t count or something. A Prayer Unanswered

I’ve experienced prayers answered immediately, and I have prayed the same prayer over and over and over. And over again. I found this old blog, written two-and-a-half years ago, right before my world came crashing down. And I mean days before the life I knew for 15 years was over.  Read on my loves, read on. “Prayers unansweredContinue Reading

Health scares and scales

I have been in the habit of jumping on the scale as soon as I wake up. For years, this has been my automatic response. YEARS. And I hate to say this but the scale pretty much dictates my mood for that day. I have snapped at my kids, and took out my frustration onContinue Reading
